2015 Oscars Predictions

The Academy will always find someway to screw up and keep normal people from watching the Oscars. This year they managed to screw up even earlier than usual by leaving out The Lego Movie for Best Animated Feature, but I’ll talk about that later. I’m going to give a rundown of the categories, what I think about them, and who will or should win each one.

Here’s my Best Movies of 2015 list to give you an idea of what to expect.

Below are all the Oscar nominees. I’m going to bold who I think will win each category.

LET YOUR HATE FLOW

Best Picture

  • American Sniper
  • Birdman
  • Boyhood
  • The Grand Budapest Hotel
  • The Imitation Game
  • Selma
  • The Theory of Everything
  • Whiplash

I haven’t seen Theory, Selma, Imitation Game, or American Sniper. Nothing like three movies that came out in January being nominated for Best Picture so people can totally see them…yeah. Whiplash got nominated and it is definitely my favorite of the year. No nominations for Gone Girl, Interstellar, Fury, or Planet of the Apes is disheartening since I’m sure I prefer those films over most that actually made the list. Right now the race seems to be between Birdman and Boyhood, and Boyhood looks to carry its win from the Golden Globes and bring home the Oscar.

Best Actor

  • Steve Carell, Foxcatcher
  • Bradley Cooper, American Sniper
  • Benedict Cumberbatch, The Imitation Game
  • Michael Keaton, Birdman
  • Eddie Redmayne, The Theory of Everything

The fact that their is no Brendan Gleeson (Calvary) or Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler) on this list is absolute shit. Those two performances were the best of the year in my opinion, but the Academy likes biopics too much apparently. Michael Keaton I’m sure will win even though he didn’t even have the best performance in his own movie. *cough* Edward Norton *cough* I’d complain about no Ralph Fiennes but I’m too busy complaining about everything else.

Best Actress

  • Marion Cotillard, Two Days, One Night
  • Felicity Jones, The Theory of Everything
  • Julianne Moore, Still Alice
  • Rosamund Pike, Gone Girl
  • Reese Witherspoon, Wild

I’ll be honest. I’ve only seen one of these movies, and that was Gone Girl. Apparently Julianne Moore is the favorite here, but I would love if Rosamund Pike won.

Best Supporting Actor

  • Robert Duvall, The Judge
  • Ethan Hawke, Boyhood
  • Edward Norton, Birdman
  • Mark Ruffalo, Foxcatcher
  • J. K. Simmons, Whiplash

Did anyone see The Judge? Like literally anybody…well if you’re won of the 10 people that has maybe you can shed some light on Robert Duvall’s performance for me. Other than that the list here is basically perfect. Every one of these performance, besides Duvall’s, should definitely be nominated. If J.K. Simmons doesn’t win, and he definitely should, look for Edward Norton to steal it.

Best Supporting Actress

  • Patricia Arquette, Boyhood
  • Laura Dern, Wild
  • Keira Knightley, The Imitation Game
  • Emma Stone, Birdman
  • Meryl Streep, Into the Woods

Patricia Arquette is my favorite out of all these, and she did win the Golden Globe so I would expect her to win the Oscar as well. Not sure why Emma Stone is nominated, didn’t see anything special about her performance in the movie really. I feel like it’s come to a point where the Academy just writes Meryl Streep’s name down for every category until she gets nominated for something.

Best Cinematography

  • Birdman
  • The Grand Budapest Hotel
  • Ida
  • Mr. Turner
  • Unbroken

I am 90% sure that Birdman will win. Put your money on it. Best part about the movie in my opinion was the cinematography and it seems a shoe in to win this year.

Best Director

  • Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Birdman
  • Richard Linklater, Boyhood
  • Bennett Miller, Foxcatcher
  • Wes Anderson, The Grand Budapest Hotel
  • Morten Tyldum, The Imitation Game

This one is basically a three man race between Linklater, Iñárritu, and Anderson. I’m pretty certain that Linklater will win, but I would definitely not be surprised if Iñárritu wins either. What would be surprising is if Anderson wins and it is possible, but I don’t agree with that.

Best Original Screenplay

  • Boyhood
  • Birdman
  • Foxcatcher
  • The Grand Budapest Hotel
  • Nightcrawler

I have no clue. I would think Birdman and Boyhood. I’m sure the Academy will pick Boyhood, and Boyhood will win everything it’s nominated for. Meh.

Best Adapted Screenplay

  • American Sniper
  • The Imitation Game
  • Inherent Vice
  • The Theory of Everything
  • Whiplash

I’m sure Gone Girl will win here-what? Gone Girl isn’t nominated?! Okay…uh…how about Whiplash? Yeah let’s go with that one.

Best Foreign Language Film

  • Ida, Poland
  • Leviathan, Russia
  • Tangerines, Estonia
  • Timbuktu, Mauritania
  • Wild Tales, Argentina

*Shrugs*

Best Makeup and Hairstyling

  • Foxcatcher
  • The Grand Budapest Hotel
  • Guardians of the Galaxy

Guardians of the Galaxy, because why the hell not?

Best Original Score

  • The Grand Budapest Hotel
  • The Imitation Game
  • Interstellar
  • Mr. Turner
  • The Theory of Everything

It’s going to be tough to choose between Interstellar and Gone Gi-WHAT? NOT NOMINATED AGAIN? Whatever.

Best Costume Design

  • The Grand Budapest Hotel
  • Inherent Vice
  • Into the Woods
  • Maleficent
  • Mr. Turner

Do you really care that much?

Best Documentary Feature

  • Citizenfour
  • Finding Vivian Maier
  • Last Days in Vietnam
  • Salt of the Earth
  • Virunga

I have seen 0 of these movies.

Best Documentary Short

  • Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1
  • Joanna
  • Our Curse
  • The Reaper
  • White Earth

The Reaper sounds cool…let’s go with that one…

Best Film Editing

  • American Sniper
  • Boyhood
  • The Grand Budapest Hotel
  • The Imitation Game
  • Whiplash

Boyhood will probably win. I’d like Whiplash to win because the editing is so tight and adds a lot to the feel and tension present throughout the movie.

Best Animated Feature

  • Big Hero 6
  • The Boxtrolls
  • How to Train Your Dragon 2
  • Song of the Sea
  • The Tale of Princess Kaguya

Message to the Academy (NSFW)

How the hell did Big Turd 6 get nominated, but Lego movie didn’t. I wrote 2000 words on why Big Hero 6 was not very good, yet here it is. Lego movie was one of the BEST movies of the entire YEAR. Lego Movie will win. Say it with me again. LEGO MOVIE WILL WIN.

Best Original Song

  • “Lost Stars,” Begin Again
  • “Grateful,” Beyond the Lights
  • “I’m Not Gonna Miss You,” Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me
  • “Everything is Awesome,” The Lego Movie
  • “Glory,” Selma

Please?

Best Production Design

  • The Grand Budapest Hotel
  • The Imitation Game
  • Interstellar
  • Into the Woods
  • Mr. Turner

I have a strong feeling Grand Budapest Hotel will win this one. It’s such a Wes Anderson kind of category for him to win.

Best Animated Short Film

  • The Bigger Picture
  • The Dam Keeper
  • Feast
  • Me and My Moulton
  • A Single Life

Feast is the shit. Probably the best animated short film I’ve ever seen. It plays right before Big Hero 6 and was actually better than that movie.

Best Live Action Short Film

  • Aya
  • Boogaloo and Graham
  • Butter Lamp
  • Paraveneh
  • The Phone Call

Uh, skip.

Best Sound Editing

  • American Sniper
  • Birdman
  • The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
  • Interstellar
  • Unbroken

Best Sound Mixing

  • American Sniper
  • Birdman
  • Interstellar
  • Unbroken
  • Whiplash

Best Visual Effects

  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier
  • Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
  • Guardians of the Galaxy
  • Interstellar
  • X-Men: Days of Future Past

Interstellar or Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Definitely.

That is all the nominees. Of course the Academy screws up like they do every year, but what can you do? Comment, share, spew vulgarities, or do whatever. I enjoy feedback and talking with people who have different opinions.
